WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Experiencing Glitches, Media Downloads Down in India

WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Experiencing Glitches, Media Downloads Down in India

WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook's services are seemingly experiencing technical glitches since earlier today. The outage appears to be global, with media reports and tweets revealing that the issue is prevalent across Europe, USA and Africa as well. In India, while the WhatsApp chat interface and Instagram posts and stories are active, transferring any form of media, including audio and images, appear to be frozen for now.
Sending of files are still active, hinting that this may be some sort of a widespread server bug that is preventing individuals from downloading content that has been shared with them. There has been no word so far from Facebook Inc., which owns each of these apps, as to why the outage must have happened, or whether that could be a cyber-attack.

As of 8:30PM IST, each of WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram have been inactive for nearly over an hour. Whlile exchanging text messages on WhatsApp remain possible, other parts of the world such as Scotland and Zimbabwe have confirm via their reports that WhatsApp is, in fact, completely down in Europe and USA. With no official update yet, there is no clarity on when might the features be restored.

WhatsApp will stop working on these devices

WhatsApp has been a boon to people across the globe and it has been connecting people for almost a decade. However, the messaging app will soon stop working on a lot of smartphones.

WhatsApp has been a boon to people across the globe and it has been connecting people for almost a decade. However, the messaging app will soon stop working on a lot of smartphones. The latest update from the messaging company has confirmed that a list of devices would no longer be compatible with the messaging app.
Many old devices will not be able to run WhatsApp as they will fail to meet the requirements for new features that the company is coming up with. The company said some devices will not be able to run WhatsApp with immediate effect while other devices will lose support by end of 2018. The company said in its website, "These platforms don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer iOS version, or to a newer Android running OS."
"If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer OS version, or to a newer Android running OS 4.0+, iPhone running iOS 7+, or Windows Phone 8.1+ so that you can continue using WhatsApp,"
Here is the list of devices which will not be able to run WhatsApp
WhatsApp will stop working on all devices running on Nokia S40 platform by end of this year. Nokia Asha series will also not be compatible with the messaging app. Current users will not be able to create new accounts neither will they be able to re-verify existing accounts. WhatsApp will also not run on Nokia Symbian S60 platform.
Android
All smartphones with Android 2.1 (Eclair) and Android 2.2 (Froyo) will not be compatible with WhatsApp as the App has stopped all updates. People who have Android version 2.3.7 (Android Gingerbread) will get updates for two more years.
Blackberry
Users with phones running on Blackberry OS, Blackberry10 and older will not be able to run WhatsApp.
Windows Phone
All users with Windows phones 8.0 will not be able to get WhatsApp updates this year. The messaging app is also not compatible with Windows Phone 7.
iPhones
WhatsApp will not work on iPhone 3GS and devices that run on iOS 6.
Users with all the listed platforms will not have the option to transfer chat history to their new platforms nor will they be able to transfer chat history between platforms. However, users will get an option to send their chat history attached to an email.

WhatsApp has blocked 1,30,000 accounts in 10 days to fight child pornography

WhatsApp has blocked 1,30,000 accounts in 10 days to fight child pornography

whatapp is also using a technique called PhotoDNA, which is also used by Facebook to identify porn and abusive images, to identify WhatsApp groups or users who could be potentially sharing child porn.

As reports after reports point out the scourge of child pornography on WhatsApp, with clips shared through private groups worldwide as well as in India, WhatsApp is apparently fighting back. The company has blocked and removed over 1,30,000 accounts in 10 days recently in a bid to clamp down on people sharing child pornography. The company removed the accounts after using AI tools it found that the accounts were probably indulged in illegal activities.
In addition to the blocking and removing the accounts WhatsApp has also shared the information related to these accounts with the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in the US so that if law enforcement agencies need relevant information in investigating child pornography they can get.
WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted, which means the company cannot look into what people are sharing. But its engineering apps are now using AI-based tools, which can look at the unencrypted information such as profile photos, group profile photos, and group information to flag off potential abusers. WhatsApp is also using a technique called PhotoDNA, which is also used by Facebook to identify porn and abusive images, to identify WhatsApp groups or users who could be potentially sharing child porn.
In a statement after reports came out that WhatsApp has become infested with users and groups in India who share child pornography, the company says zero tolerance for people who misuse its app. "WhatsApp has a zero-tolerance policy around child sexual abuse. We deploy our most advanced technology, including artificial intelligence to scan profile photos and actively ban accounts suspected of sharing this vile content. We also respond to law enforcement requests in India and around the world. Sadly, because both app stores and communications services are being misused to spread abusive content, technology companies must work together to stop it," a WhatsApp spokesperson said.
The company also responded to the reports of how WhatsApp users were finding child porn through third-party apps that allowed them to look for WhatsApp groups. It says that WhatsApp does not provide any search feature for groups.
The company notes that it does not provide a search function for people or groups, nor it we encourage publication of invite links to private groups. WhatsApp is also working with Google and Apple to ensure that third-party apps that hook into WhatsApp or allow sharing of group links do not feature on the iOS and play stores.
However, it is important to note that while WhatsApp is taking measures to limit how one can look groups on the chat app, it has yet to address a long-standing complaint from users related to how anyone can add any WhatsApp users to a group. If someone has a user's number, not only that user can be added to a WhatsApp group without his or her permission but can also be automatically made the group admin if the original admin leaves.

BSNL, Vodafone Idea Launch 'No Blackout Days' on December 31 and in 2019 to Counter Reliance Jio

BSNL, Vodafone Idea Launch 'No Blackout Days' on December 31 and in 2019 to Counter Reliance Jio

Following the footsteps of Reliance Jio, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Vodafone Idea have announced the discontinuation of "blackout days". This means the subscribers of BSNL and Vodafone Idea won't be levied any additional charges for sending SMS messages on December 31, 2018, and all other special days of the year 2019 and the existing SMS benefits, as per their packs, will be valid throughout 365 days a year. Both telcos were previously offering SMS benefits through their respective packs with an exception for blackout days. This was unlike Reliance Jio that has been offering "no blackout days" to its subscribers since its launch in September 2016.
BSNL in a press statement said that all its consumers would continue to get all the benefits of their plan or special tariff service on the New Year's Eve 2018. The telco has also extended no blackout days for the calendar year 2019.
Vodafone Idea in a separate statement confirmed that with the new move, both Vodafone and Ideasubscribers across India would be able to continue availing special SMS benefits as per their packs all 365 days a year - with no exception of blackout days. Notably, Vodafone Idea brought the elimination of special SMS charges on Christmas Days earlier this month.
We've reached out to Bharti Airtel to get clarity on whether the telco is copying the ongoing trend and offering no blackout days starting next year. While the company hasn't yet responded via regular channels, an Airtel customer care executive told Gadgets 360 that Bharti Airtel is still considering five blackout days in a calendar year and prior to all blackout days, the telco sends an intimation to subscribers to inform them the dates on which SMS pack/ discounted rate isn't applicable.
The blackout days were originally aimed to generate some revenue during occasions such as local festivals like Diwali and Holi and global celebrations including New Year. However, with the growth in adoption of instant messaging platforms such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, telecom operators are finding it difficult to garner high volume SMS messages during special occasions.
Having said that, it has been observed that despite having robust support at the backend to enable a large number of message transactions in a day, instant messaging platforms often face server-side outage on global occasions such as New Year.
WhatsApp particularly suffered a global outage for about an hour on the evening of December 31, 2017. The Facebook-owned messaging platform notably saw the delivery of over 20 billion messages by its users in India on New Year's Eve last year that was its highest-ever user activity on a single day. Nevertheless, this isn't the case with SMS messages that are being circulated directly through cellular networks.
As we mentioned, unlike other telcos such as BSNL and Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio is already offering no blackout days to its subscribers. The Mumbai-based telecom operator is also disrupting the market with its attractive data offers.
