Jio News With Support for Over 12 Indian Languages Debuts on Android, iOS, Web

Amid the ongoing elections season, Reliance Jio on Thursday launched Jio News -- an online aggregator that comes in the form of the Jio News app for Android and iOS devices and Web-based Jio News service. The new development is aimed to provide real-time news updates on various major events, including Lok Sabha and Assembly Elections 2019 and IPL 2019. Jio News supports over 12 Indian languages and is touted to offer news content from more than 150 live news channels, over 800 magazines, 250-plus newspapers, and various online blogs as well as news websites from India and around the world. It also uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to bring the "most relevant" content to users after scanning thousands of news sources.
Jio News serves news content in most of the widely-spoken languages in India, such as Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Urdu. Reliance Jio claimed in a press statement that users on Jio News could also personalise their homepage by choosing their interest areas from politics, sports, entertainment, business, technology, lifestyle, fashion, health, and financial among others.
Apart from providing in the text form, Reliance Jio's Jio News is also touted to offer over 150 live TV news channels. It also shows trending videos of genres such as automotive, Bollywood, fashion, health, technology, and sports.
Essentially, Jio News comes as a consolidated offering of Jio XpressNews, Jio Mags, and Jio NewsPaper with the addition of live TV and videos. Reliance Jio mentioned in the statement that all existing users of these apps would be migrated to Jio News. Also, Jio users will specifically receive "premium access", whereas non-Jio users will be required to access all the available features by logging in to Jio News during the trial period.
There is a dedicated Newsstand section to let users read magazines and newspapers without downloading them on their devices. Furthermore, the Jio News app provides the ability to read magazine issues and newspaper archives from the past.

Jio Browser Launched for Android, Features Support for 8 Indian Languages

Jio Browser Launched for Android, Features Support for 8 Indian Languages
Jio Browser - the latest app by the telecom giant - is now available for Android users via Google Play. Developed by Reliance Industries, the browser app is touted to be a 'fast and lite' solution for Web browsing. To attract Indian users, the Jio Browser app has been given support for as many as eight Indian languages. There are also features such an Incognito mode and the ability to share your favourite news and video content with friends on social media. The Jio Browser for Android notably also features a download manager.
Among other features, the Jio Browser from RIL is designed to support regional languages. There are eight different languages, including Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu. By default, the browser works in English.
Once you change the language from English to any of your regional language, the Jio Browser app automatically changes not only the interface elements with the selected language but also the content including the latest news stories. You can also see websites such as Google and Facebook in your regional language after selecting it from the Settings menu. Similarly, there is an option to adjust the text size manually.

Jio Browser features

If Indian language support isn't your area of interest, the Jio Browser app has a home screen that displays news content and latest updates. The Jio Browser lists news from categories such as entertainment, politics, and sports. You can also move to the videos tab on the browser to watch the available videos while on-the-go.
The news and video content are being served on the Jio Browser directly from Hyderabad-based news aggregator platform PublicVibe. This seems similar to how UC Browser serves content through UC News.
The Jio Browser also has a default favourites tab that lists websites such as MyJio, BookMyShow, AJio, Amazon.in, Flipkart, and NDTV among others. Notably, you can't sort the listing on the favourites tab as per your preference or add your favourite websites. The browser, however, has the option to bookmark different URLs.

Similar to a large number of Web browsers available for Android devices, the Jio Browser features a large search bar on the home screen. You can also press the microphone icon from the search bar to use Google Voice Search for your queries. Furthermore, the browser supports multiple tabs and has an Incognito mode.
Reliance claims that the Jio Browser delivers a fast Web browsing experience. However, it is worth noting here that the browser doesn't generate cached webpage like how Opera Mini enables a faster browsing experience on affordable devices.
You can download the Jio Browser for your Android device directly from Google Play. The app comes in 4.8MB of size and is compatible with devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop and above.
The Google Play listing showed a 4.4 rating consolidated from 1,546 user reviews at the time of filing this story. However, many users weren't pleased with the simple user interface that some found to be half-baked.

BSNL, Vodafone Idea Launch 'No Blackout Days' on December 31 and in 2019 to Counter Reliance Jio

BSNL, Vodafone Idea Launch 'No Blackout Days' on December 31 and in 2019 to Counter Reliance Jio

Following the footsteps of Reliance Jio, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Vodafone Idea have announced the discontinuation of "blackout days". This means the subscribers of BSNL and Vodafone Idea won't be levied any additional charges for sending SMS messages on December 31, 2018, and all other special days of the year 2019 and the existing SMS benefits, as per their packs, will be valid throughout 365 days a year. Both telcos were previously offering SMS benefits through their respective packs with an exception for blackout days. This was unlike Reliance Jio that has been offering "no blackout days" to its subscribers since its launch in September 2016.
BSNL in a press statement said that all its consumers would continue to get all the benefits of their plan or special tariff service on the New Year's Eve 2018. The telco has also extended no blackout days for the calendar year 2019.
Vodafone Idea in a separate statement confirmed that with the new move, both Vodafone and Ideasubscribers across India would be able to continue availing special SMS benefits as per their packs all 365 days a year - with no exception of blackout days. Notably, Vodafone Idea brought the elimination of special SMS charges on Christmas Days earlier this month.
We've reached out to Bharti Airtel to get clarity on whether the telco is copying the ongoing trend and offering no blackout days starting next year. While the company hasn't yet responded via regular channels, an Airtel customer care executive told Gadgets 360 that Bharti Airtel is still considering five blackout days in a calendar year and prior to all blackout days, the telco sends an intimation to subscribers to inform them the dates on which SMS pack/ discounted rate isn't applicable.
The blackout days were originally aimed to generate some revenue during occasions such as local festivals like Diwali and Holi and global celebrations including New Year. However, with the growth in adoption of instant messaging platforms such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, telecom operators are finding it difficult to garner high volume SMS messages during special occasions.
Having said that, it has been observed that despite having robust support at the backend to enable a large number of message transactions in a day, instant messaging platforms often face server-side outage on global occasions such as New Year.
WhatsApp particularly suffered a global outage for about an hour on the evening of December 31, 2017. The Facebook-owned messaging platform notably saw the delivery of over 20 billion messages by its users in India on New Year's Eve last year that was its highest-ever user activity on a single day. Nevertheless, this isn't the case with SMS messages that are being circulated directly through cellular networks.
As we mentioned, unlike other telcos such as BSNL and Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio is already offering no blackout days to its subscribers. The Mumbai-based telecom operator is also disrupting the market with its attractive data offers.
